A Visit to Kapiti Island

print friendly page print friendly

Kaka

During those formative years as a kid, between 4 and 14, I spent part of most school holidays playing on the beach at Waikanae. Kapiti Island became magic, a place of desire, so close but always out of reach. I dreamed of spending time there. A planned trip as a student in Wellington had to be aborted because of bad weather.

But 10 years ago my wife, Pat, and I spent a day exploring the regenerating bush below the island’s main peak. The bird life was fantastic. But still unsatiated, I determined to go back.

We did, last month, and spent a night there in the lodge at the north end. Our hosts were members of the Barrett family. Their hospitality, their stories of the island’s history, and their warmth made it a memorable visit.

Again, the bird life was fantastic in this mammalian pest-free environment. It made me even more aware of what New Zealand must have been like before humans arrived, and what Bream Head could be like.

Kaka were the larakins, kukupa plump and tame enough to touch, and you had to watch your sandwiches with the weka!

If you are down that way I strongly recommend a visit. Check it out on DoC’s web site www.doc.govt.nz/templates/PlaceProfile.aspx?id=35101 or visit the Lodge directly on www.kapitiislandalive.co.nz/
