Geoff Pike and Friend

Congratulations to Geoff Pike who was the recent recipient of a Department of Conservation Award for his outstanding contribution to conservation.

Geoff is seen here introducing Sir Edmund Hillary to the Bream Head Scenic Reserve at the official launching of the Bream Head Conservation Trust in November 2004.

Geoff is now one of the board members on the Trust as well as being the chairperson of its Restoration Committee. When he received his award, typically he said it was because of the excellent support he gets from the Committee. That’s true, it is an excellent committee of dedicated people, but then Geoff is a remarkable leader.

I’ve worked with Geoffrey Pike over the past nine years, since the Department of Conservation first mooted the idea of a community based support group for the Bream Head Restoration Project. He played a key role in the setting up of the Bream Head Conservation Trust. He is passionate about the project and he works from the philosophy that “they (the native plants and animals in the Reserve) have as much right to be here, for their own sake, as we do. If we don’t look after them who else will?”

Geoff is a man who is gentle, quietly unassuming and modest; effective, efficient and reliable; he is determined and tenacious, supportive, affirming and inclusive, generous and kind. He has a quiet sense of humour, is unflappable, laid-back and easy to work with and a skilled surfer.

We are delighted that Geoff has received a Depart-ment of Conservation award.
