Pohutukawa - a symbol of a New Zealand Xmas |
NEWS FLASH...
I quote from the Collins Guide to the Birds of New Zealand :
“Up to c. 1860 [the bellbird] was abundant but a marked decline, which... may have been due to disease...affected populations throughout New Zealand. [It] recovered in nearly all districts [but in Northland it] became locally extinct. [It] has been noted in recent years at...Whangarei Heads suggesting that recolonisation may be occurring...”
So it was great to get this e-mail from an excited member of our Restoration Committee today, and again I quote :
“Hi all, just had an excited phone call from Peter Anderson (DOC). Pete is at Bream Head today conducting his annual bird counts - whilst recording Pete heard the tweet of young birds and blow me down he saw two juvenile bellbirds being attended to by their Mum and Dad. Bloody exciting, shame he didn't have a camera to record the event but great to have conclusive evidence.”
AND FINALLY...
I’d like to wish you all a happy Xmas and a great 2006.
