The Bream Head Conservation Trust is community-based, and was established in 2002 as a partnership between the community, Iwi, the Whangarei District Council and the Department of Conservation.

The Trust’s main aim is to restore and maintain the ecological environment of Bream Head as it existed in former times (in brief to restore the dawn chorus) in ways that enable people to enjoy its richness and diversity

To succeed in achieving this aim the Trust needs the interest, support and involvement of members of the public

tree planting

Join the Trust ! Be part of a dedicated and enthusiastic group restoring Bream Head to its former glory.

Pictured are octogenarian Allan Pike and his teenage granddaughter Acacia Prince-Pike enjoying the winter sunshine as they plant pohutukawa above Ocean Beach.

Reforestation of these barren hill sides will create welcoming habitats for birds flying in from the neighbouring Hen and Chickens Islands to boost future Bream Head populations

Become a Friend of Bream Head

Joining the Trust as a ‘Friend of Bream Head’ is a direct way of actively supporting conservation work on the Reserve. The Trust values the enthusiasm of youth, the wisdom of experience, and the resourcefulness of business. Apart from direct financial help there is a range of practical tasks in which community volunteers of all ages and levels of fitness can be involved. Members receive regular newsletters about events and activities affecting the Trust and Bream Head Scenic Reserve. As well as joining 'Friends of Bream Head' yourself, make a gift of membership to someone else.

Community volunteers who have become involved as Trustees or Restoration Committee members inspect aspects of construction of the predator-proof fence at Tawharanui. Their input into the work of the organisation is crucial to its success.

kiwi release

Pete Graham, a DoC field worker, and two young friends are obviously enjoying the experience of working together in releasing a juvenile kiwi.

The young man holding the kiwi seems to be taking the responsibility of doing so very seriously!

field day archaeology

Friends of Bream Head enjoy an archaeological field day conducted by Jono Carpenter, DoC archaeologist, at Bream Head Scenic Reserve.

rest

It's not all sweat and toil!

Friends of Bream Head on a planting day enjoy a welcome 'cuppa' and time to catch up socially.
